WIPO's global IP filing statistics 2023: Innovation gains surging momentum in China
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the 2023 global intellectual property (IP) filing statistics recently, showcasing China's brilliant performance in innovation.
Data show that in 2023, the total number of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) Patent applications filled under amounted to 272,600, China reigns the top origin of PCT applications for the fifth consecutive year. The total number of international trademarks applications filed under WIPO's Madrid System reached 64,200 in 2023, 10,987 of which were submitted by the top-performing US-based applicants, followed by those located in Germany (6,613) and China (5,473). Among the top 10 countries of origin, only China and the Republic of Korea saw an increase in international trademark applications, with Chinese applicants registering a 7.7% growth compared to 2022. In 2023, the total number of designs included in international applications under WIPO's Hague System reached a record high of 25,343, marking the third consecutive year of growth. Germany remained the top user of the international design system with 4,517 designs, followed by China (3,758) and the U.S. (2,668). Among the top ten countries, only China and Türkiye experienced double-digit growth in 2023.
In terms of PCT applicants, Chinese enterprises rose on the stage with 14 ones making the top 50. In 2023, China's Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. was the top filer with 6,494 published PCT applications. Among the top ten applicants, four were from China with Contemporary Amperex Technology of China experiencing the fastest growth by moving up 84 positions to eighth place.
In the education sector of PCT applicants, a total of 12 Chinese universities were included in the top 50 educational institutions. The University of California System (U.S.) remained the top applicant with 531 published PCT applications. Suzhou University came in second (China, 332 applications) followed by the University of Texas System (U.S., 217 applications), Tsinghua University (China, 209 applicants) and Stanford University (U.S., 180 applicants).
"Longer-term trends show IP use rising steadily in an increasingly global, digitalized economy and spreading across the globe as economies around the world develop. Countries in Asia now represent 55.7% of international patent applications via WIPO – up from 40.5 percent just one decade ago. WIPO is dedicated to furthering a global uptake in IP use, particularly with groups that have historically been under-represented in the IP sector, like SMEs, youth and women. 近日,世界知识产权组织(WIPO)公布了2023年全球知识产权申报统计数据,中国创新表现亮眼。
数据显示,2023年,全球通过《专利合作条约》(PCT)途径提交的国际专利申请总量为27.26万件,其中,中国通过PCT途径提交的国际专利申请量再次位居世界第一,连续5年位居榜首。全球申请人提交马德里商标国际注册申请为6.42万件,其中,美国申请人提交的马德里商标国际注册申请数量最多,为1.0987万件,其次是德国和中国的申请人,分别为6613件、5473件。在排名前十的国家中,只有中国和韩国在2022年至2023年期间实现了增长,其中,中国申请人提交的马德里商标国际注册申请较2022年增长了7.7%。通过海牙体系提交的外观设计国际申请数量创下新高,达2.5343万件,连续三年实现增长,前三名分别是德国(4517件)、中国(3758件)和美国(2668件)。在排名前十的国家中,仅中国与土耳其在2023年实现了两位数增长。
在PCT国际专利申请人方面,中国企业表现不俗,共有14家上榜申请人位列前50名。2023年,中国华为技术有限公司以6494件PCT国际专利申请量位居全球榜首。在前10位申请人中,有4位来自中国,其中,中国宁德时代排名增长最快,排名第8位,上升了84位。
在教育领域的PCT国际专利申请人排名中,2023年,中国共有12所高校居于教育机构PCT申请前50名。在该排名中,美国加利福尼亚大学(531件)仍是最大PCT国际专利申请人,中国苏州大学以332件PCT国际专利申请位居第二,其次是美国得克萨斯大学系统(217件)、中国清华大学(209件)和美国斯坦福大学(180件)。
WIPO总干事邓鸿森表示,长期趋势表明,在日益全球化、数字化的经济中,全球对知识产权的使用在稳步增长,并随着世界各国经济的发展而向全球扩展。通过WIPO提交的国际专利申请中,亚洲国家目前占55.7%,而十年前仅占40.5%。WIPO致力于促进在全球范围内普及对知识产权的使用,特别是对于那些在知识产权领域历来代表性不足的群体,如中小企业、青年和女性。任何地方创新和创造力的提升都将惠及我们所有人,无论我们生活在何处。(张彬彬 薛佩雯)
